How automatic winding works
An automatic mechanical watch uses a rotating mass, commonly called the rotor, to convert wrist movement into energy stored in the mainspring. When the watch is not worn long enough, its power reserve eventually runs down and the watch stops.
Three ways to keep an automatic watch running
Wear it: regular wrist movement is the natural method.
Wind it manually: many automatic movements also allow manual winding through the crown. Follow the watch manufacturer's instructions because procedures vary.
Use a watch winder: a winder rotates the watch in programmed intervals. It is useful when you rotate several watches or want to avoid repeatedly resetting the time, date, GMT, moonphase, or other complications.
TPD and rotation direction
Watch winders may offer adjustable turns per day (TPD) and clockwise, counterclockwise, or bidirectional movement. The correct setting depends on the movement, so manufacturer guidance should take priority over generic charts.
Do you need a watch winder?
No. A mechanical watch can safely stop when not in use. A winder is mainly a convenience and organization tool. It is most useful for collectors who rotate automatic watches frequently.
